Penn State will go into Saturday’s game against Purdue looking to break a disturbing trend.
Well, there are a few trends that Penn State would like to break.
The team would like to break its four-game losing streak, both overall and in the Big Ten.
PSU would also like to have a run of 10+ yards, which hasn’t been accomplished yet in Big Ten play. But there’s a particular trend that dates back to last season, and isn’t good. Last year, PSU started October with James Franklin as its head coach and fired him 12 days into the month.
The reason for that was because PSU, as heavy favorites, lost its first two October matchups to UCLA and Northwestern, which led to Franklin’s dismissal the day after the Northwestern game.
With Terry Smith taking over as the interim, Penn State lost its last game of the month the next week at Iowa.
So PSU has last its lost six October games, and is not looking to lose a seventh.
The last tine Penn State won a game in October was Oct. 26, 2024 at Wisconsin.
That win moved PSU to 7-0 and kept the program in the top three ahead its clash with No. 4 Ohio State in Beaver Stadium the next week.
Despite being less than two years ago, those days feel far away, and a big reason has been that Penn State hasn’t gotten it done in October.
A win over Purdue wouldn’t get PSU back to that level, but it would be PSU’s first win since Sept. 19, so it would still feel good for the program and its fanbase.
