Penn State is once again the queen of college volleyball.
For the first time since 2014, Penn State women’s volleyball has won the national title.
It’s the eighth title overall, adding onto what’s one of the best programs in college sports history.
The final step was beating Louisville, and as usual, Jess Mruzik led the way with 29 kills and 14 digs. Camryn Hannah added 19 kills and Caroline Jurevicius had 10.
Playing in Louisville’s home arena, the first two sets were wild. Penn State took the first one, 25-23.
It should have won the second one and had 10– yes, 10– chances for set points.
But Louisville ended up winning a classic, 34-32 in extra points.
Penn State responded in the next set. Although it did lose an 11th straight set point, it finally pulled out a 25-20 set win to pull to within one set of winning a national title.
It kept the beat going in the third set, and as a result, Penn State’s national champions.
It was the end of what’s been, to say the least, an emotional season for Penn State coach Katy Schumacher-Cawley. The third-year boss was diagnosed with breast cancer in September. With the season now over, Schumacher-Cawley has more time to focus on things that, in the grand scheme things, are more important than sports. She is the first female head coach to win a national title.
With eight national titles, Penn State is one shy of Stanford, who leads the nation with nine.
