With Penn State comfortably in front of the SMU Mustangs, 38-3, in the First Round of the College Football Playoff, quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer trotted on the field to make his collegiate debut.
The first drive of his collegiate career did not go the way the true freshman envisioned. On the second play and his first pass, Grunkemeyer looked for Harrison Wallace III, but the high throw was in and out of the hands of the receiver and intercepted by Brandon Crossley.

The Lewis Center, Ohio was slated as the backup quarterback after Beau Pribula entered the transfer portal, who appeared in all 12 games this season for the Nittany Lions.
Grunkemeyer was the lone quarterback commit in the Penn State 2024 recruiting class and was a consensus four-star. ESPN rated the 6-2 signal caller a top-five QB nationally.
As a senior at Olentangy High School, Grunkemeyer completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,517 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Grunkemeyer made his collegiate debut after starting Penn State quarterback Drew Allar completed 13-of-22 passes for 127 yards. He added 10 yards on the ground.
