Penn State football’s tight end coach is all aboard the “Tyler Warren for Heisman” train.
All but two of the questions Ty Howle received at his Zoom session late Thursday morning were about Tyler Warren, the player who has become one of the most talked about in college football this season.
One of those questions— asked by yours truly— was if Howle is aboard the “Warren for Heisman” train.
After the team’s 49-10 win at Purdue last Saturday— in which Warren had nearly 200 yards of total offense— head coach James Franklin and quarterback Drew Allar each said Warren should be considered for the Heisman trophy.
Howle joined the party Thursday.
SHOULD WARREN BE CONSIDERED?

“Absolutely,” Howle said. “The thing that makes him special is all the ways he can affect a game. He can catch it for a lot of yards, make explosive plays, break tackles. This offseason, looking at areas to improve, was run after the catch. Not just speed, but using his off-arm and breaking tackles. That’s been a big piece of his success in the receiving and the rushing game. I think his skill set is definitely what makes him one of the best players in the country and be able to affect our team in a lot of different ways. It just speaks to his level of football IQ.”

Of Warren’s 808 receiving yards (he has 157 rushing, too), 509 have come after the catch. Only Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr. (646) has more. Fannin Jr.— who had 137 yards and a touchdown on 11 catches against Penn State Sept. 7– is the only person with a realistic chance of beating Warren out for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to America’s top tight end.
For Howle, Warren is one of the best at any position.
“Obviously for the Heisman, you want the best football players in the country,” Howle said, “and I think he’s one of the best. So I would absolutely endorse him.”
Penn State takes on Minnesota Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 on CBS.
