Only two teams are ranked ahead of Penn State football currently and one of them lost Saturday night.
No. 5 Georgia took on No. 1 Texas in Austin was a game many felt would be a classic. It ended up falling short.
Georgia took care of Texas 30-15. As a result, there will, without question, be a new No. 1 come Sunday afternoon.
That No. 1 will likely be Oregon, who had been No. 2 and improved to 7-0 with a 35-0 win at Purdue Friday night. The question of who will be No. 2 is more intriguing, and Penn State is in the mix.
PENN STATE COULD BE NO. 2
It’s simple logic. A team ahead of Penn State lost, so therefore, PSU has a realistic chance of moving up to No. 2. PSU has done everything it’s supposed to do through six games. Although it hasn’t always been easy— 34.5-point underdog Bowling Green only lost to Penn State by 7– not a lot of teams can start 6-0, and Penn State has been one of them. As a result, Penn State has its highest ranking since 2017, when it rose to No. 2 led by RB Saquon Barkley and QB Trace McSorley. That team ended up finishing 11-2 with a Fiesta Bowl win.
So that should settle it, right? PSU should be No. 2. Except…
GEORGIA HAS A CASE

Beating the No. 1 team in the country on the road at night is impressive. Beating the No. 1 team in the country on the road at night by double digits is a whole different level. Although Georgia has one loss, and that loss was to an Alabama team that’s lost two of its past three, it’d be crazy for the polls not to consider moving Georgia to No. 2.
PSU can’t control where it’s ranked. It can control preparing for Wisconsin. That’s who it plays at 7:30 in Madison on NBC Saturday night.
