For the second time in less than 48 hours, a wide receiver target who was once favored to commit to Penn State has committed to another school.
On Thursday, Lex Cyrus, a four-star from Harrisburg who had Penn State in his final two, committed to South Carolina.
Two days later, Taz Williams Jr. committed to Baylor.
When Williams announced his commitment date, the traditional graphic had four schools: Michigan, Penn State, SMU and Texas A&M.
But late in his recruitment, it became apparent that Baylor would be a contender, and it ended up being the winner.
Unlike Cyrus, Williams wasn’t being recruited out of Pennsylvania or anywhere close to the state.
The four-star comes from Red Oak High School in Texas.
But Williams does have ties to Pennsylvania.
He’s also originally from Pennsylvania.
Williams grew up in the Churchill area of Pittsburgh and would have played at Woodland Hills High School had his family not moved to Dallas.
Williams took an official visit to PSU.
“It was a dope experience, better than I expected,” said Williams. “They really showed me the love and treated me like a top priority and paid attention to all the details. For me, the highlight was the offensive staff breaking down film with me and showing me how they plan on using and developing me. Also, bonding with the other commits from Pittsburgh and chilling with some of the players on the team outside of the coaches and the staff.”
Although a lot can change in the world of recruiting, Penn State has, for now, lost out on Williams.
Penn State has missed out on some of Pennsylvania’s best Class of 2025 prospects.
The No. 1 PA player in the class, Spring-Ford QB Matt Zollers, had Penn State as a finalist but committed to Missouri.
OL Michael Carroll, a legacy prospect from Central Bucks East, committed to Alabama and Zahir Mathis, a star from Philly’s famous Imhotep Charter, is committed to Ohio State (although he did take an OV to Penn State the weekend of June 21).
Penn State does have six PA prospects committed to its Class of 2025.
PSU also has two receivers committed to its ‘25 class: four-star Jeff Exioner and three-star Lyrick Samuel.
