For Penn State and every other school, transfer portal season is officially well underway and commitments have been flying out just as fast as people joined in the portal.
Penn State’s Big Ten brethren are no stranger to the portal. Wisconsin picked up a commitment from former Miami starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
Van Dyke was a three-year starter at Miami and amassed 7,478 yards and 54 touchdowns but entered the portal at the end of the season.
He immediately bolsters a Wisconsin quarterback group that wasn’t impressive in 2023 and struggled mightily at times.
Van Dyke took an official visit to Wisconsin over the weekend before committing Tuesday. His best year came in 2021 when he threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman. Those numbers led to him winning ACC Rookie of the Year.
But since then, Van Dyke hasn’t quite matched that production. He tossed for 1,844 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022 before throwing for 2,703 yards and 19 touchdowns, but also 12 interceptions this past season.
There wasn’t much consistency for Van Dyke while with Miami as his head coach, former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, was fired after his first season, plus the multiple coordinators he had there as well.
The consistency at Wisconsin with head coach Luke Fickell should make this a productive pairing and one Penn State fans will see. Wisconsin hosts Penn State Saturday, Oct. 26 next season. It marks the first time the two have squared off since a 16-10 Penn State win at Camp Randall in 2021.
Penn State will not get its starting QB from the transfer portal, barring something crazy. Drew Allar is set to return for 2024.
