Beer is coming to Beaver Stadium.

It’s felt inevitable for a while, and it once looked like Penn State would start selling alcohol during its Sept. 24 game with Central Michigan.

It didn’t happen that Saturday, but this Saturday against Northwestern, it’s happening.

Penn State’s athletic department announced Wednesday morning that beer sales at Beaver Stadium would begin Saturday, Oct. 1.

Beer will be available throughout the stadium except for areas near the student section.

Anybody who wants to buy alcohol must be 21 or older and prove their age with an ID, allowing them to obtain a wristband. All IDs are going to be scanned to prove their authenticity.

There are restrictions on how much beer people can buy at once. Patrons are allowed to buy a maximum of two 16 oz. Cans at one time and aren’t able to use cash at any location.

Sales will conclude at the end of the third quarter, and nobody is allowed to take their beer out of Beaver Stadium with them.

Word got out of Penn State’s plan to sell alcohol last month. Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics presented a plan to the Board of Trustees Committee on Legal and Compliance Monday, Sept. 12, to start selling beer and other beverages inside Beaver Stadium.

The Tuesday after the Central Michigan game, reporters in Beaver Stadium for coach James Franklin’s weekly press conference noticed “beer stations,” and Wednesday’s decision felt inevitable from there.
