Maryland will be playing Penn State Nov. 28 without Mike Locksley.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported late Friday morning that Maryland had fired Locksley in the middle of his eighth season.
The Terps went 39-54 overall at Maryland and started 2-5 this year, which made his dismissal inevitable.
Locksley played against Penn State every year from 2019-2024, going 1-5. His last meeting with PSU ended up being his most memorable.
During an otherwise unremarkable 44-7 Penn State win at Beaver Stadium, Locksley took issue with Penn State coach James Franklin deciding to go for a final touchdown in the final seconds.
The two exchanged words at midfield, with each reinforcing their respective stance in their postgame pressers. Locksley ended up meeting Franklin one more time, falling to Virginia Tech in College Park last month. Now, Locksley has met the same fate that Franklin did last October.
Like Penn State last year, Maryland needed to find an interim coach.
That person is defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, per Pete Thamel.
College football fans have gotten used to midseason firings, although it hasn’t happened much this season.
At this time last year, there has already been seven coaches fired, with two of them being Franklin and former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry.
First-year Penn State coach Matt Campbell has a while before his job security becomes a reasonable question, but it’s hard to argue that his first year hasn’t been a disappointment to this point. Penn State is 3-4 overall, 0-4 in the Big Ten with all three of its wins coming against non-Power Four competition.
Penn State has five games to turn it around, starting with Purdue at Beaver Stadium Oct. 31.
