Penn State head coach Matt Campbell provided an update on wide receiver Koby Howard on Tuesday, but it wasn’t necessarily the news the Nittany Lions were hoping to hear.
Howard, who emerged as Penn State’s most explosive receiving threat through the first three games of the season, remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury. His timetable for returning remains uncertain.
“I would say his availability for Purdue is questionable at this moment,” Campbell said.
Howard’s status comes at a difficult time for Penn State, which has struggled to establish consistency offensively during its four-game losing streak.
Before suffering the injury, Howard was developing into one of the Big Ten’s most dangerous big-play receivers.
Through three games, Howard caught 12 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns, averaging an impressive 28.7 yards per reception.
He also recorded two 100-yard receiving performances during that stretch, becoming the first Penn State receiver to accomplish that feat in a season since Parker Washington and Jahan Dotson in 2021.
Howard’s absence against Wisconsin forced Penn State to redistribute opportunities throughout its receiving corps, but replacing his ability to stretch defenses vertically has proven challenging.
For quarterback Rocco Becht, having Howard available would provide another explosive option as the Nittany Lions search for answers offensively.
His speed and downfield playmaking ability can force opposing defenses to respect the deep passing game, potentially creating additional opportunities underneath.
With Purdue approaching, Howard’s availability remains one of Penn State’s most significant offensive questions.
For now, Campbell and the Nittany Lions will have to prepare for the possibility of playing another game without their most explosive receiver.
