UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Matt Campbell has coached Rocco Becht long enough to understand that quarterback play isn’t always about producing the spectacular.
Sometimes it is about seeing what the defense is willing to concede and making it pay.
That might be the best way to describe Becht’s Penn State debut Saturday. Marshall loaded the box, brought pressure and dared the Nittany Lions to beat it through the air.
Becht obliged.
The redshirt senior completed 13 of 18 passes for 271 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in Penn State’s 45-0 win, providing an immediate glimpse of why Campbell trusted his veteran quarterback to follow him from Iowa State to Happy Valley.
“I think for Rocco to be able to handle that and distribute the ball, sometimes being a great quarterback is like being a great point guard,” Campbell said. “You got to be a great distributor of where the ball needs to go, and I thought he was outstanding today.”
The numbers support Campbell’s assessment, but a deeper look shows just how efficiently Becht attacked what Marshall gave him.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Becht earned an 80.9 passing grade and averaged 10.5 yards in average depth of target. He finished with an NFL passer rating of 157.5 and didn’t record a turnover-worthy play.
The most impressive portion of his afternoon came at the intermediate level.
On throws traveling 10-to-19 yards downfield, Becht completed 7 of 8 attempts for 185 yards and three touchdowns, averaging a staggering 23.1 yards per attempt. PFF gave him a 92.4 passing grade on those throws.
Even more telling was where he did his damage.
Becht carved Marshall apart between the numbers, particularly at the intermediate level, completing all six of his attempts there for 165 yards and three touchdowns. His PFF passing grade on intermediate throws over the middle was 93.1.
It wasn’t simply a collection of safe completions inflating the box score, either. Becht finished with five completions of at least 20 yards.
The first major strike came in the opening quarter when Becht found Koby Howard for a 42-yard touchdown. Later in the quarter, he connected with Brett Eskildsen for a 25-yard score.
By halftime, Benjamin Brahmer had joined the party with an eight-yard touchdown reception. Becht added his fourth scoring pass in the third quarter, finding Zay Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown.
Four touchdowns. Four different receivers.
That distribution is precisely what Campbell was talking about.
Marshall’s approach also created an unusual offensive statistical profile. Penn State didn’t need to establish a dominant rushing attack because the Thundering Herd’s commitment to stopping it opened opportunities elsewhere.

Click here to add us.“I would say there’s a reason there were 62 rushing yards, because there were probably 300 passing yards,” Campbell said. “When you have a quarterback that’s played extensively, I think he’s got the ability to take what the defense gives him.”.
Saturday marked Becht’s 40th career collegiate start, the most among active FBS quarterbacks. He has now quarterbacked teams to 27 career victories, also the most among current FBS quarterbacks.
That experience showed against pressure.
Marshall blitzed Becht on nearly half of his dropbacks, according to PFF. He responded by completing 6 of 8 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns when blitzed, averaging 18.6 yards per attempt.
When Marshall actually generated pressure, Becht made it hurt. His lone official pass attempt under pressure went for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Campbell also credited Penn State’s protection, and for good reason. Becht was kept clean on 84.2% of his dropbacks. From a clean pocket, he completed 12 of 16 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns.
Perhaps the only blemish came when Penn State tried to stretch Marshall vertically. Becht went 0-for-2 on passes of 20-plus air yards. Yet Penn State hardly needed the traditional deep ball because Becht was devastating in the intermediate areas and allowed his receivers to generate explosive plays.
There was another notable split. Without play action, Becht completed 10 of 12 passes for 214 yards and all four of his touchdowns, earning an 86.6 PFF passing grade. With play action, he was 3-for-5 for 57 yards.
That suggests much of Saturday’s production wasn’t dependent on misdirection. Becht was simply diagnosing the defense, getting the football to the right place and allowing Penn State’s skill players to work.
His four touchdown passes established a career high after he had thrown three touchdowns seven previous times. Becht became the first Penn State quarterback with four touchdown passes in a game since Drew Allar threw five against Maryland in 2023.
He now owns 68 career touchdown passes, has thrown at least one in six consecutive games and recorded his 20th career 200-yard passing performance.
Those milestones are impressive.
But for Penn State, the more important takeaway from Becht’s debut may have been how he reached them.
Marshall presented a challenge at the line of scrimmage. Becht recognized it, adjusted and repeatedly attacked the vulnerable areas of the defense.
That is what an experienced quarterback is supposed to do.
And in his first start wearing Penn State colors, Becht looked every bit like one.
