Penn State Football: What Players Changed Their Numbers?

James Peoples take a handoff during 11-on-11.

There have been some changes to Penn State football’s uniform numbers since spring camp ended almost three months ago.

Running back James Peoples wore No. 23 during spring camp. He now wears No. 1. Also wearing No. 1 will be Ike Ezeogu, a defensive end who previously wore No. 88. Receiver Kyron Hudson wore No. 1 for Penn State last year and is now out of eligibility. Defensively, safety Jaylen Reed was the last player to wear the number.

A Penn State quarterback has also changed his number. Still, it isn’t Rocco Becht. Connor Barry, a transfer from Division III Christopher Newport, changed his number from No. 17 to No. 10. He’ll share this number with linebacker Caleb Bacon.

A drastic numerical change came from receiver Peter Gonzalez. Gonzalez had been No. 84, but is now No. 7, marking a 77-number difference. Safety Zion Tracy is now the lone Penn State player to be wearing No. 7.

Arguably the most prominent player to switch numbers for Penn State is defensive end Yvan Kemajou. This was even more of a drastic change than Gonzalez. Kemajou was No. 99 and is now No. 19, a difference of 80 numbers. No. 19 had been worn by fellow DE Chaz Coleman, who played his true freshman season at Penn State last year before transferring to Tennessee.

Every freshman at Penn State has now arrived on campus. The most recent arrivals are:

  • LB Keian Kaiser (No. 40)
  • OL Pete Eglitis (No. 75)
  • DE Elijah Reeder (No. 88)
  • P Lucas Tenbrock (No. 96)

Penn State opens the 2026 season against Marshall Sept. 5 at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 on FS1.
