This is one in a series of stories breaking down each of the players on Penn State football’s 2026 roster.
Vaboue Toure enters 2026 as one of the younger defensive backs in Penn State’s safety room trying to turn early playing time into a larger role.
Toure, a redshirt sophomore from Pleasantville, New Jersey, appeared in five games during his true freshman season in 2024 while preserving his redshirt. He made six tackles, including two solo stops, and added one pass breakup.
His most productive outing came against UCLA, when he finished with five tackles. He also assisted on a tackle against Maryland.
In 2025, Toure’s role expanded. According to Pro Football Focus, he played 90 defensive snaps for Penn State, including appearances against Nevada, FIU, Villanova, Nebraska and Clemson in the bowl game. His strongest work came near the line of scrimmage, where he posted a 77.7 run-defense grade and a 79.0 tackling grade. He was credited with nine tackles, one assist and just one missed tackle on the season.
Coverage remains the area to watch. Toure allowed three completions on six targets for 31 yards, one touchdown and a 50 percent completion rate against him.
Before Penn State
Toure played at Irvington High School, where he was a three-year letterman and team captain in 2023. He helped Irvington to an 8-3 record as a junior and led the program to a 10-2 season, conference championship and regional championship as a sophomore.
As a senior, Toure produced 90 tackles, a punt return touchdown and eight rushing touchdowns. As a junior, he recorded 89 tackles, four interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, both returned for touchdowns.
Where he stands: Toure gives Penn State a developing safety with special teams value, tackling production and game experience. His next step is becoming more consistent in coverage and pushing for defensive snaps in a crowded secondary. Toure has an excellent opportunity to be mentored by Iowa State transfers Marcus Neal Jr. and Jeremiah Cooper as he continues his development.
