After leading Michigan to their second national championship in 2026, now former head coach of the Wolverines, Dusty May, has accepted the head coaching position for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
May becomes the franchise’s eleventh head coach in team history, replacing Jason Kidd after five seasons.
May started to earn national recognition after leading Florida Atlantic to the 2023 Final Four. He coached the Owls from 2018-2024 before accepting the head role in Ann Arbor. In May’s first year at Michigan, he turned the Wolverines from an 8-24 team the year before to a 27-10 team that reached the Sweet Sixteen in 2025.
There were rumors circulating in the spring concerning May and his NBA interest in head coaching positions, specifically with the Orlando Magic and the Golden State Warriors.
May will now look to turn around a Dallas Mavericks team that had a difficult 2025–26 NBA season, finishing with a 26-56 record. They placed 12th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
