Freshman star Gavin McKenna added another major honor to his remarkable season Friday night, earning CCM/AHCA Second-Team All-American recognition and becoming just the fourth Penn State player ever to receive All-American status.
McKenna joins Cole Hults, Nate Sucese and Aiden Fink as the only Nittany Lions to earn the distinction, further cementing one of the greatest individual seasons in program history. The Whitehorse, Yukon native already made history last month as Penn State’s first Big Ten Freshman of the Year and also became the second Hobey Baker Top-10 finalist in school history.
McKenna’s freshman campaign was nothing short of sensational. He won the Big Ten scoring title with 38 points in 24 conference games, becoming the first Nittany Lion ever to lead the league. His 51 total points were the most by a freshman in program history and the second-most in a single season overall, trailing only Fink’s school record by two.
His 36 assists set one of Penn State’s nine program records this year, while his 1.46 points-per-game average led the Big Ten and ranked second nationally. McKenna also delivered one of the most explosive games in college hockey history in February, recording eight points and seven assists in an 11-4 win over Ohio State.
For Penn State, McKenna’s All-American honor is another sign that one of college hockey’s brightest young stars is only getting started.
