Ann Arbor – Mich. – Penn State Nittany Lions men’s ice hockey heads back on the road Saturday with a chance to reach the Big Ten Championship game as the Nittany Lions face Michigan Wolverines men’s ice hockey in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
Penn State advanced with a 6–2 victory over Minnesota in the quarterfinal round Wednesday night, a result that may have also secured the Nittany Lions a spot in the NCAA Tournament field. Now the focus turns to Ann Arbor and historic Yost Ice Arena, where the Wolverines await.
Michigan enters the weekend as the No. 1-ranked team in the country and the second seed in the Big Ten Tournament, setting up one of the most intriguing semifinal matchups in the conference’s 13-year history.

Penn State has been comfortable playing in Ann Arbor in recent seasons. The Nittany Lions have split the past eight games at Yost, including winning three of four games there last season. That stretch included Penn State sweeping Michigan in a best-of-three 2025 Big Ten quarterfinal series, eliminating the Wolverines and ultimately bumping them out of the NCAA Tournament field.
This season’s regular-season series tilted slightly in Michigan’s favor. The Wolverines went 2-1-1 against Penn State, collecting eight of a possible 12 points.
The two teams met in Ann Arbor just last month, producing one of the most entertaining series of the season. Michigan claimed the extra point in the opener after a 4–4 tie and shootout victory, before closing the weekend with a 6–3 win.
Despite Michigan’s regular-season success, Penn State has historically held the upper hand in postseason play. The programs have met five times previously in the Big Ten Tournament, all in the quarterfinal round, with Penn State owning a 4–1 advantage, including three consecutive postseason wins over the Wolverines.
Saturday will mark the first postseason meeting between the programs in the semifinal round or later.
The appearance also adds to Penn State’s growing tournament résumé. The Nittany Lions are now tied with Minnesota for the second-most Big Ten semifinal appearances in conference history with 10, trailing only Ohio State’s 11.
Penn State has also played 31 Big Ten Tournament games, tied with Michigan for the second-most all-time behind Ohio State (34). Head coach Guy Gadowsky owns 17 career Big Ten Tournament victories, the second-most in conference history.
MICHIGAN NOTES
Michigan’s success this season has been driven by one of the most explosive offenses in the country. The Wolverines lead the nation averaging 4.49 goals per game with 157 total goals, while also allowing just 2.37 goals per game, the second-best mark in the Big Ten.
That combination has produced the best goal differential in the nation at +2.12.
Michigan has been particularly dangerous late in games, outscoring opponents 62–29 in the third period, the best final-frame scoring margin in the country. The Wolverines are also 5-0-1 in overtime games, with their lone tie coming against Penn State earlier this season.
Special teams have also been a major strength. Michigan’s power play leads the nation at 30.2 percent (38-for-126) and is tied with Penn State for second-most power-play goals nationally.
Leading the Wolverines’ forward group is captain TJ Hughes, the active career scoring leader in college hockey with 170 career points. Hughes has 48 points this season, ranking among the nation’s top scorers.
Sophomore Michael Hage leads the team with 49 points, including a national-best 37 assists, while fellow sophomore Will Horcoff ranks among the nation’s goal leaders with 23 goals, including 11 on the power play.
In goal, freshman Jack Ivankovic has started the past eight games and owns a .923 save percentage and 2.11 goals-against average, both among the top marks in the Big Ten.
PENN STATE NOTES
Penn State’s offensive production has been fueled by contributions from all over the lineup, including an unusually productive blue line.
The Nittany Lion defense has already produced 24 goals this season, a significant increase from the nine scored last year.
Freshman defenseman Jackson Smith leads the way with 11 goals and 26 points, both of which lead Big Ten defensemen. His 11 goals also set a Penn State single-season record for a defenseman.
Senior defenseman Jarod Crespo has been Smith’s primary partner, recording career highs with five goals and 12 assists this season.
Offensively, freshman sensation Gavin McKenna continues to rewrite the Penn State record book. McKenna reached 50 points this season, becoming just the third Nittany Lion ever to hit that mark in a single year.
His 36 assists are already a Penn State single-season record, his 1.52 points per game ranks second nationally, and became the first Nittany Lion to win the Big Ten scoring championship.
Junior Matt DiMarsico also reached a major milestone Wednesday, becoming just the 10th player in program history to reach 100 career points.
Meanwhile, star forward Aiden Fink enters the semifinal on a seven-game point streak, collecting 16 points during that stretch.
With both teams among the most explosive in the nation offensively, Saturday’s semifinal could easily become one of the highest-scoring games of the Big Ten postseason.
