No. 1 Penn State shattered the NCAA wrestling indoor attendance record during its second Bryce Jordan Center dual of the calendar year, drawing a sold-out crowd of 16,006 fans for a marquee showdown against No. 2 Ohio State.
The electric atmosphere reflected the growing national profile of the Nittany Lions’ dynasty program, as fans packed the arena hours before the opening bout. Among those in attendance were Penn State football coach Matt Campbell, UFC fighter Bo Nickal, and members of the university’s 2016 national championship wrestling team, underscoring the event’s significance across the athletic department.
The previous indoor record was also set at the Bryce Jordan Center, where 15,998 fans watched Penn State face Iowa on Feb. 12, 2018. Prior to that, a 2013 dual between Penn State and Pitt drew 15,996 spectators, marking another milestone in the program’s steady rise in popularity.
While the indoor mark now belongs to Penn State, the overall NCAA wrestling attendance record remains with the Iowa Hawkeyes, who drew 42,287 fans to a historic outdoor dual against Oklahoma State at Kinnick Stadium on Nov. 14, 2015.
Friday night’s record-setting crowd further cemented Penn State’s position as the sport’s premier draw and highlighted the surging popularity of college wrestling nationwide.
