Penn State continues to add experienced depth through the transfer portal, securing a commitment from former Iowa State wide receiver Chase Sowell.
A member of the Class of 2022 out of Texas, Sowell’s college career has been marked by persistence through change.
He originally signed with Colorado and appeared in four games as a true freshman before a season-ending injury forced a redshirt year.
Following a coaching change in Boulder, Sowell entered the transfer portal and landed at East Carolina, where he spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
At ECU, Sowell became a reliable target, totaling 81 receptions for 1,300 yards and four touchdowns over two years.
Another coaching transition prompted him to explore new options once again, ultimately choosing to follow Matt Campbell to Iowa State over offers that included Florida.
In his lone season with Iowa State, Sowell played in all 12 games and finished as the team’s second-leading receiver behind future Penn State teammate Brett Eskildsen.
Sowell recorded 32 catches for 500 yards and two touchdowns, earning a 65.3 overall offensive grade from Pro Football Focus, including a 66.5 receiving grade.
At 6’3” 210 pounds, Sowell excelled as a vertical threat, earning an elite 93.0 PFF grade on targets of 20 yards or more. He was also effective underneath, posting an 87.5 grade on short-area targets.
Sowell became part of a significant influx of former Cyclones joining Penn State, as the Nittany Lions added 16 Iowa State transfers since the transfer portal opened, including quarterback Rocco Becht.
