Penn State quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, he told ESPN and first reported by Pete Thamel, marking a significant development for the Nittany Lions’ quarterback room.
Grunkemeyer, a redshirt freshman with three years of eligibility remaining, started seven games during the 2025 season and played a key role in Penn State’s strong finish.
After taking over late in the year, Grunkemeyer guided the Nittany Lions to four consecutive wins to close the season, showcasing poise and efficiency well beyond his experience level. He completed 69.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 1,339 yards and eight touchdowns while limiting costly mistakes and keeping the offense on schedule.
A four-star prospect in the Class of 2024, Grunkemeyer starred at Olentangy High School in Lewis Center, Ohio. He drew early interest from Iowa State and made two unofficial visits to Matt Campbell and the Cyclones in 2022 before ultimately committing to Penn State in May 2023.
Advanced metrics highlight his impact. Through bowl season, including the Pinstripe Bowl, Grunkemeyer earned the highest offensive grade among Penn State quarterbacks at 86.9, along with an 87.2 passing grade, per Pro Football Focus.
With proven production, strong efficiency, and multiple seasons remaining, Grunkemeyer should be one of the more intriguing quarterback options available in the transfer portal this cycle.
The move almost makes certain Penn State will be looking for a new quarterback in the transfer portal, with Campbell’s quarterback at Iowa State Rocco Becht available.
