After one year at Penn State, a veteran offensive lineman is going back into the transfer portal.
Redshirt sophomore TJ Shanahan Jr. will re-enter the portal when it opens tomorrow, he announced on Thursday.
“To Nittany Nation: Thank you for your support. Playing in front of the best fans in college football at Beaver Stadium is an experience I will carry with me forever,” Shanahan said on X. “The energy you bring is unmatched, and I am grateful for the way you embraced me.”
Shanahan played 419 snaps as a depth offensive lineman with the Nittany Lions after transferring from Texas A&M prior to this season.
He has versatility at guard and center and started four games in a row at guard against UCLA, Northwestern, Iowa, and Ohio State.
“To my teammates: You guys are my brothers. The bond we built in the trenches and the locker room is something I’ll always cherish,” Shanahan said. “Thank you for pushing me to be my best every single day.”
Shanahan also thanked James Franklin and offensive line coach Phil Trautwein for believing in him and the hours they put in.
Penn State finished the season 7-6 following a 22-10 victory over Clemson in the 2025 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.
Shanahan would have had a strong chance to be a starter in 2026 in Matt Campbell’s first season.
The transfer portal opens on January 2 for a single 15-day window, closing on January 16.
