One of Penn State’s great linebackers is stepping away from football.
The Los Angeles Chargers announced Thursday that linebacker coach and Penn State letterman NaVorro Bowman will no longer be coaching in the NFL.
Bowman is stepping aside to spend more time with his son, who is one of the top basketball players in the class of 2027.
NaVorro Bowman Jr. is a 6-foot-2 point guard from Sherman Oaks, California and plays for Notre Dame High School.
ESPN regards him as a four-star recruit and the No. 42 overall player in his recruiting class.
NaVorro Bowman, 37, was a First-Team All-Big Ten honoree during his three years at Penn State. In 33 games, Bowman recorded 117 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and three interceptions. He combined for 32.5 tackles for loss in his final 24 games.
He was drafted in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Bowman was a First-Team All-Pro four times and a three-time Pro-Bowl selection in San Francisco.
In 99 career games spanning seven seasons before retirement, Bowman made 798 tackles, 48 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and had seven forced fumbles. He went to the Super Bowl with the 49ers in 2012.
