Ki-Jana Carter is firmly etched into Penn State football history as one of the most dominant running backs the program has ever produced. Now, his legacy has reached its highest honor, as Carter has been named to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 by the National Football Foundation.
Carter’s resume at Penn State is unmatched. A Big Ten champion, unanimous All-American, Heisman Trophy finalist, and Rose Bowl MVP, he was the centerpiece of the undefeated 1994 Nittany Lions the was one of the most explosive offenses college football has ever seen.
Carter, quarterback Kerry Collins, wide receiver Bobby Engram, and tight end Kyle Brady led an offense that averaged 47 points per game and capped its perfect season with a Rose Bowl victory over Oregon.
After rushing for 1,026 yards in 11 games as a sophomore and 1,539 yards in 11 games as a junior, Carter finished his Penn State career averaging an eye-popping 7.2 yards per carry with 34 rushing touchdowns. His 1994 season alone included 7.8 yards per attempt and 23 touchdowns, earning him consensus first-team All-American honors and a runner-up finish in Heisman Trophy voting to Colorado’s Rashaan Salaam.
Carter’s signature performances came against Michigan State in 1994, when he rushed for 227 yards and five touchdowns. He then delivered one of the most iconic moments in Rose Bowl history, opening the game with an 83-yard touchdown run that was Penn State’s longest bowl run ever, until Nick Singleton’s 87 yard run in the 2023 Rose Bowl, on his way to 156 yards and three touchdowns, earning co-MVP honors.
Following that game, Joe Paterno encouraged Carter to enter the NFL Draft, where he was selected No. 1 overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1995.
