Just when we thought the wildest coaching carousel anybody can remember was over, one of the biggest jobs in the country has opened up.
Michigan has fired Sherrone Moore with cause.
It was first reported by On3’s Pete Nakos that Michigan had fired Moore, and Michigan AD Warde Manuel soon confirmed the news and provided further detail.
“UM head coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” the statement read. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Manuel also confirmed that Biff Poggi will be the team’s interim coach for its Citrus Bowl game against Texas New Year’s Eve.
Poggi worked on Jim Harbaugh’s staff as associate HC from 2021-22 before becoming Charlotte’s head coach.
This season, he returned to Michigan, joining Moore’s staff as associate head coach.
Moore’s time at Michigan ends after two seasons with a 16-8 record. He’ll probably be best remember for his role as interim head coach late in the team’s 2023 national championship run.
With Harbaugh suspended as a result of the Connor Stalions scandal, Moore led Michigan to three straight wins to close out the regular season. Two of those wins were against top 10 programs in Penn State and Ohio State game.
Penn State fans would rather forget about that game, which is best remembered for Michigan running the ball on 32 straight plays in the second half.
Before the Michigan job opened, this was already perhaps the craziest coaching carousel in college football history, with big-time programs such as Florida, Auburn, LSU and Penn State all firing their coaches in the middle of the season.
Now, the Michigan job is open.
