It had been a good day for Penn State in terms of roster retention, and it turned into a good day for staff retention, too.
Per a report by Lions247, new Penn State coach Matt Campbell is keeping special teams coordinator Justin Lustig on staff.
This is a big keep for PSU.
Lustig was one of the top special teams coaches in the country in 2025, which led to him being a nominee for the Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation’s top assistant coach. Four Penn State special teamers— Long snapper Tyler Duzansky, punter/kickoff specialist Gabriel Nwouse and place kicker Ryan Baker and kick returner Nicholas Singleton earned all-Big Ten recognition.
Additionally, Dani Dennis-Sutton tied a school record for most blocked punts in a season with three, joining Penn State greats Jack Ham and Andre Collins.
Lustig came over from Vanderbilt following the 2023 season, and during spring practice, player’s already noticed his impact.
“(Lustig has) all the little details on what to do in certain situations, and just really getting that conversation with coach Lustig and understanding his plan and his goals for the season and relaying that to the team,” linebacker and special teams captain Dom DeLuca said per the Daily Collegian.
“Every rep is a game rep and he keeps on making everything you do super important,” punter Riley Thompson said. “For us as specialists, I think that’s the main thing. We have to focus on all the little details, so having him there and having you harp on those little details has helped us hone in on those little things that we need to get fixed up.”
