Matt Campbell is officially the next head football coach at Penn State, and early Monday afternoon, he addressed media for the first time.
Mentioning Joe Paterno, Todd Blackledge and Kyle Brady is a good way to score points with Penn State fans, and Campbell mentioned all of them in the first minute of his opening statement.
He not only mention their names: Campbell specifically mentioned how he’d heard about them when he was growing up in Ohio.
Here’s more from Campbell’s opening statement.
WHAT CAMPBELL SAID
“I’m going to take a second. It’s been a whirlwind. I’m going to say this. I’m humbled, grateful to be standing before all of you. This world class university, this world class athletic department, and truly one of the greatest football programs in the world and it’s an absolute honor to be the next head football coach at Penn State University.”
The last five days have been a whirlwind. Truly have been. As fate had it, it’s this full-circle moment of my life, our family’s life, this young boy that grew up in Massillon, Ohio, and all you heard about was Todd Blackledge and you understood his excellence and what he stood for and watched my father compete against him, to spending so much of my childhood in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. My great grandfather, who worked in the coal mines, my grandparents who worked in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. And all you heard around those family discussions was Coach Paterno and the toughness and the character of the Penn State football program to the 16-year-old tight end who started to get recruited. And you couldn’t stop watching No. 81, this Kyle Brady, and all you kept saying was ‘man, someday, I want to be like that guy.’ It’s a dream come true for me.”
