One of the best players in Penn State football history will reportedly be interviewed for the head coaching job.
Per former PSU OL Landon Tengwall, Penn State WR great and current Washington Commanders WR coach Bobby Engram will be interviewing for the Penn State head coaching job “this coming week.”
To be clear, there is nothing yet that indicates Engram is a favorite to land the job.
Engram has never been a head coach, and his offensive coordinator experience is limited to one season with Wisconsin (2022). But since Engram is a Penn State legend and does have a coaching career that spans almost 15 years, there’s no reason for Penn State to not at least talk to him.
Engram’s legacy at PSU speaks for itself.
Almost 30 years after he played his last game at PSU, Engram is still the school’s all-time receiving leader.
He was an All-American in 1993, ‘94 and ‘95, becoming the inaugural winner of the Fred Biletnikoff Award (nation’s top receiver) in 1994.
That 1994 team is one of the most beloved in PSU history, finishing 12-0 and beating Oregon in the Rose Bowl. The debate still rages today as to whether Penn State would have beaten Nebraska— won was voted national champion that year— had the format allowed for that matchup to take place.
PSU and Nebraska are facing off hours after the report of Engram being interviewed surfaced.
After PSU, Engram played 14 seasons in the NFL, most notably for the Bears (1996-2000) and Seahawks (2001-08).
Here’s Engram’s full coaching resume.
- 2011: San Francisco 49ers (offensive assistant)
- 2012-13: Pitt (WR coach)
- 2014-18: Baltimore Ravens (WR coach)
- 2019-21: Baltimore Ravens (TE coach)
