The Penn State men’s basketball team will play in its second game of the regular season this Saturday at 1:00 P.M. in West Haven, Connecticut against New Haven.
New Haven is transitioning to Division I this year and will be competing in the Northeast Conference. Last year as a Division II squad, the Chargers competed in the Northeast 10 Conference. They finished with an overall record of 12-17 and a conference record of 7-13.
Their coach, Ted Hotaling, will be entering his 13th season. Hotaling has taken the Chargers to new heights during his tenure, Division II Elite Eight for the first time in program history in 2023.
The Chargers took on UCONN in their first game of the season this past Monday, and they gave the No. 4 team in the country a good fight. The Huskies ended up winning 79-55, but the Chargers were only down 13 at halftime and kept things close in the second half. Sophomore forward Andre Pash led the Chargers with 17 points. Sophomore guard, Najimi George, added 14 points and graduate student guard, Maison Adeleye, finished with 13 points.
Penn State coach Mike Rhoades, said in his weekly presser that people thought he was crazy scheduling a non-conference game like this on the road.
“You got to put yourself out there,” Rhoades said. “Ted runs a great program up there…he’s a very good coach. They made a transition to Division 1, they were looking for home games. We had the opportunity to get them to return the game multiple times, so we’re going to do that…we’re going to go play in a little, small gym…that’s awesome, it will be an awesome atmosphere for our young team.”
Penn State is coming off its season opener with a 76-68 win against Fairfield. The back-and-forth battle had 13 lead changes and 12 ties before Penn State went on a 16-2 run in the final 3:28 of the game to secure victory.
