No. 2 Miami suffered a stunning upset at the hands of Louisville, and it just might affect the Penn State coaching search.
Jeff Brohm is a good coach.
He proved that at Purdue, where he took over a losing program and ended with a winning record in the Big Ten.
He’s proving it at his alma mater, Louisville, now, where he’s 24-9 overall and 14-5 in the ACC. The most recent win was the biggest of Brohn’s career: Beating No. 2 Miami 24-21 on the road.
This win will get Louisville in the top 25, and will get Penn State fans talking.
Before Friday night, nobody thought of Brohm as a possible candidate for the job.
But as Penn State fans have seen over the last two weeks, things can change awfully fast, and the Miami win should open some eyes to what Brohm has accomplished.
Brohm is also an offensive mind, which some Penn State fans are clamoring for. He also had a much better night than another guy who has been linked to the Penn State job: Matt Rhule.
Rhule had been running a top 25 program at Nebraska, but losing 24-6 to Minnesota will knock the Huskers out of the rankings and will not excite Penn State fans about the possibility of Rhule being offered the job.
If Rhule was offered, he’d have a chance to return to his alma mater. For Brohm to go to Penn State, he’d have to leave his alma mater.
Brohm played at Louisville in the late 80s and early 90s, being a QB for Howard Schnellenberger. Louisville is home for him, and home is a tough thing to walk away from.
