The odds have shifted in the Penn State coaching search following news that Nebraska coach Matt Rhule signed a contract extension with the Cornhuskers through the 2032 season.
Rhule, a State College native and former Penn State linebacker (1994–97), had long been considered a candidate to replace James Franklin. His renewed commitment to Nebraska, however, has opened the door for a new favorite.
According to Kalshi, Louisville coach Jeff Brohm now leads the betting market with 40% odds to become the next head coach in Happy Valley.
Trailing Brohm is Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, listed at 29%, who Nittany Sports Now reported earlier this week was a candidate. Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz follows at 17%.
Rounding out the top four is Iowa State’s Matt Campbell at 14%. Campbell has overseen four of the Cyclones’ winningest seasons, including last year’s program-record 11-win campaign capped by a Pop-Tarts Bowl victory over Miami.
Penn State dismissed Franklin midway through his 12th season, despite his 104 wins tying Rip Engle for the second-most wins in program history.
Brohm played at Louisville in the late 80s and early 90s, being a QB for Howard Schnellenberger. Louisville is home for him, and home is a tough thing to walk away from.
Jeff Brohm is a good coach.
He proved that at Purdue, where he took over a losing program and ended with a winning record in the Big Ten.
He’s proving it at his alma mater, Louisville, now, where he’s 24-9 overall and 14-5 in the ACC. One of the most recent wins was the biggest of Brohm’s career: Beating No. 2 Miami 24-21 on the road
The Penn State coaching search now centers on which candidates can restore stability—and championship aspirations—to Happy Valley.
