In one of the most stunning NFL trades this century, a former Penn State star is on the move and getting the money he’s sought for months.
On Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys traded star edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark, according to multiple insiders, including Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter.
Rapoport reported the Packers are signing Parsons to a four-year, $188 million extension to make him the highest-paid defensive player in football. $120 million is fully guaranteed up front.
Parsons is the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history and will earn $47 million per season, significantly exceeding Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt’s record-setting deal of $41 million earlier this offseason.
The former Penn State star was in the final year of his contract in Dallas and feuded with owner Jerry Jones throughout the process. Jones acted differently than he did with Dak Prescott, publicly throwing Parsons under the bus and being unhappy with the negotiations.
Parsons and Jones had discussed the frameworks of a deal without Parsons’ agent present, and it became an issue when going back to the negotiating table.
A three-time All-Pro, Parsons was selected in the first round by Dallas in 2021. He is one of three players to total 12 or more sacks in four of the last five seasons.
Only 26, Parsons owns 63 tackles for loss, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in four seasons. The Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021, Parsons has made the Pro Bowl every season and is a generational talent the Packers could have for a long time.
A stunning trade, it will be looked back on with ramifications for the next decade. A monumental day.
