One of the top Class of 2026 Penn State wrestling commits has been dominant at Fargo.
Sam Herring, rocking a Pittsburgh Pirates singlet, is 5-0 with all five wins coming either via fall or tech fall.
He tech-falled one opponent in 48 seconds and another in 34.
In the other three matches, only one went about three minutes with another one lasting just 1:22.
Now, Herring has to win three more matches to walk away with a junior national championship at 138 pounds. Those bouts will take place Wednesday.
Herring is overshadowed in Penn State’s Class of 2026, and it’s through no fault of his own.
When a class has the No. 3 overall wrestler in the country committed to it, he’s going to command most of the attention, and that’s the case with Penn State, which has Jayden James committed from New Jersey.
Herring is also overshadowed even on his own high school team.
It just so happens that the top two Class of 2026 wrestlers— Bo Bassett (uncommitted) and Jax Forrest (Oklahoma State) also wrestle for Bishop McCort, located in Johnstown.
But Herring is no slouch, either. Having been hindered by injury his first two seasons and thus unable to compete in the state tournament, Herring was finally healthy this season and finished third at 139 pounds. He ended the season 50-5 and is 89-17 overall for his career.
Indeed, the future of Penn State wrestling is quite bright, as is the present (12 national titles in 14 years is pretty good, eh?)
With generational talents Marcus Blaze and PJ Duke leading the charge for the 2025 Class and James and Herring committed in ‘26, the train doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon.
