Hiring general managers is becoming more prevalent across college sports, and people are wondering if Penn State football could soon join in on the fun.
Recently, Stanford hired Indianapolis Colts great Andrew Luck to be its GM.
Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft said he is ‘100 percent supportive’ of the idea.
“We have people in the building that are doing that job right now,” Kraft said.
The difference is many programs around the country that already have a GM in place have full control of the roster, which Kraft doesn’t agree with.
“I do not think that’s right,” Kraft said. “They’re coming (to Penn State) because they’re going to play for the coaches and James Franklin’s football program.”
Many general managers are being brought in to handle aspects such as NIL and scholarships for their program, a job that many feel has become too much for a head coach to handle in major college football.
“We continue to talk to a lot of people,” Kraft said. “But as this is evolving, a lot of work in the building’s been done. I would not put it past James and us to have a GM at some point.”
