Good afternoon, PSU wrestling fans. The Nittany Lions host Maryland at Rec Hall at 1 p.m. this afternoon. The Nittany Lions will have the same lineup from Friday night’s dual against Michigan. Follow along here as the match rolls on for details.
125 – Luke Lilledahl surely has earned the nickname, โLightning,โ by now. Everything he does is fast. Lilledahl nearly got a pin off a takedown right to the back of Marylandโs Tyler Garvin in the first period as he built a 13-2 lead in the first three minutes. In total, Lilledahl recorded a 20-4 technical fall in 3:42.
133 – Itโs easy to feel good for Kyison Garcia. Backups at Penn State have to make the most of their opportunities when they get them, and Garcia is doing really well in his limited time on the mat as Braeden Davis battles an injury. The redshirt freshman from Utah was a little overmatched against Terps 11th-ranked Braxton Brown, but Garcia fought in a 9-1 major decision loss.
141 – Beau Bartlett has a knack for doing just enough to win, but that wasnโt the case in this one. Bartlett got two takedowns in the first period plus two back points, and one more takedown in the second and third periods to get a 17-3 win over Marylandโs Dario Lemus.
149 – Shayne Van Ness was never really in trouble for this one. In fact, he was close to a pin on Marylandโs Kal Miller in the first period. He was also close to a pin at the end, but the four back points was enough for a 17-2 technical fall.
157 – For the second time in three days, Tyler Kasak was placed in concussion protocol. This time, he could not return to action as he injury defaulted Tyler Kasak in 4:21. The Nittany Lions lead 14-10 at intermission.
165 – After his first match that wasnโt a technical fall on Friday, Mitchell Mesenbrink went back to work as usual against Marylandโs Alex Uryniak. Mesenbrink picked up five takedowns in a 19-3 technical fall.
174 – Levi Haines and Marylandโs Branson John battled through a scoreless two periods, although Haines rode out John in the second period. Haines did get a stall warning in the second period. Haines got an escape early in the third period and also got two takedowns in an 8-1 victory over John.
184 – It was more of the same for Carter Starocci against the Terrapinsโ Jaxon Smith. Starocci got two takedowns in each of the first two periods, and a final one in the third to get the technical fall. Starocci also got four stall points in the match in a 21-3 win.
197 – Josh Barr had one of the most thrilling matches of the season on Friday, but this one wasnโt quite as exciting.against Marylandโs Chase Mielnik. Mielnik had to fight out of a pin as Barr took a 17-2 technical fall.
285 – Seth Nevills, a former PSU wrestler, was welcomed back to Rec Hall to a nice applause against former teammate Greg Kerkvliet. Kerkvliet was dominant again, including a thunderous double-leg on Nevills in the match. Kerkvliet got the 8-3 decision over Nevills to finish the dual meet.
