James Franklin and Penn State are still trying to reach “big dog” status.

In recruiting news, a talented LB from the state of Virginia has locked in his official visit to Penn State.

Early Monday afternoon, Mathieu Kanu, a three-star from Patriot High School in Nokesville, Virginia, announced via Twitter than he plans to visit Penn State June 12-15.

Kanu is quite interested in Penn State.

Of the 17 schools that have offered him per 247Sports, Penn State is the only one where Kanu’s interest level is “warm” per 247. The 6-foot-3, 227-pounder also has offers from other big time schools. They include Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

In an interview with Lions247, Kanu said he picked that specific weekend because it works best for his father, who along with his son has bonded with Penn State.

“That was the best time for my dad,” Kanu told Lions247. “The bond that has been created and what I’ve seen from them through times being there made it easy for me to set up the visit.”

Kanu said he’s spent a lot of time around legendary PSU LB and current coach Dan Connor as well as head coach James Franklin.

“Basically talking about their excitement to have me there, their love of my character and how I play with my limited time at the position,” he said. “And what they see me being in the future.”

WHO ELSE IS IN PLAY?

So who else is in play for Kanu besides Penn State in recruiting?

Per the man himself, an in-state school run by a former Penn State defensive coordinator, Brent Pry, is a player.

Virginia Tech is in motion,” Kanu told Lions247. “They were the first big school to recruit me and I built a bond with them through the year and being there multiple times.”

Virginia Tech offered Kanu this past October.

Penn State offered him in November.

So far, Kanu has visited Penn State three times. He was there for the team’s White Out win over Washington Nov. 9, it’s Senior Day win over Maryland three weeks later and, last recently, for a Junior Day event in January.
