Former Penn State tight end Theo Johnson’s bid to become the New York Giants starting tight end has been placed on pause.
On Tuesday, the Giants placed Johnson on the active/physically unable to perform list with an undisclosed injury.
Johnson (6-foot-6, 264-pounds) will be eligible to return to the active roster at any time during training camp or the preseason once he’s able to pass a physical.
The Giants selected Johnson in the 4th round of the 2024 NFL Draft and envisioned him having an immediate role in the offense. That thought process sped up with the unexpected retirement of Darren Waller.
Once he returns to the field, Johnson will be competing against Daniel Bellinger for the starting job.
Last season for Penn State, Johnson caught a career-high 34 passes for 341 yards and seven touchdowns. In four seasons with the Nittany Lions, Johnson caught 77 passes for 938 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Johnson has the size and speed to be a major weapon at the NFL level.
