In recruiting news, Kurt McHenry, a 125-pounder from Michigan, has committed to Penn State wrestling, he announced via Instagram Sunday night.
McHenry hasn’t seen much action for Michigan in three seasons with the program.
He started his career in the 2019-20 season, where he redshirted.
The next season, he wrestled two matches at 125 and lost both of them. His first dual meet match came against nationally-ranked Malik Heinselman of Ohio State.
He fought hard against Heinselman but ended up losing a 3-1 decision.
This past season, McHenry didn’t see any action for Michigan in dual meets.
He did wrestle in the Findlay Open in November, winning the whole thing by going 5-0.
Before Michigan, McHenry was a three-time Maryland state champion at St. Paul’s School for Boys. He also won two Cadet World Championships, something only two Americans had previously done. He won one at 92 pounds in 2016 and another at 101 pounds the next year.
Additionally, McHenry won three Beast of the East championships and won a Powerade title in 2016. He finished his high school career 147-6 and never lost a match in Maryland.
As a senior, McHenry competed at the 2019 Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic, and got a win for team USA.
McHenry’s father, also named Kurt, wrestled at George Mason.
The younger McHenry is the fourth transfer that’s committed to Penn State wrestling in this recruiting cycle. Two of the first three to commit were All-Americans in 2023. Andy Nagao is coming over from Minnesota, and three-time All-American Bernie Traux IV is coming from Cal Poly.
They also added middleweight Mitchell Mesenbrink from Cal Baptist. Penn State’s working to improve at 125 pounds this season and took another step toward doing that by getting a commitment from McHenry.
