Penn State head coach James FranklinΒ and offensive line coach Phil Trautwein have been talked about emphasizing recruiting on the offensive line in the past, and they delivered Penn Stateβs fourth four-star o-linemen to end the 2023 recruiting cycle.
Onoh (6-foot-5, 270 pounds) chose Penn State over in-state school Maryland, Ole Miss and Rutgers, among others. Heβs is one of the nationβs fastest-rising recruits. Onoh is the No. 5 player in Maryland, the No. 20 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 257 overall player according to 247 Sportsβ Composite Rankings.
What Chimdy Onoh Brings to Penn State:
Onoh can play guard or tackle, but heβll likely be a tackle at the college level, as that was his position in high school. Penn State will need bodies to step up at left tackle assuming Olu FashanuΒ leaves for the NFL after the 2023 season. Heβs an explosive player off the snap that will use his initial punch to stalemate defenders at the line of scrimmage. Onoh plays a nasty brand of football up until the whistle. He can easily pull to the second-level blocking in the running game and will use his power to regularly pancake opposing linebackers and defensive backs.
In pass protection, Onoh can get into his stance quickly and has the power and length to consistently stave off pass rushers. Onoh will need to work on his core strength playing in the Big Ten which he will do so after his basketball and track and field season. He is the Maryland 4A State champion in the shot put.
Onoh joins fellow four-star signees Alex Birchmeier, Anthony Donkoh, and in-state five-star enrollee Jβven WillamsΒ in the offensive line room for this recruiting class.
