Penn State Names Captains for Matt Campbell Debut

Transfer quarterback Rocco Becht looks to pass during 7 on 7.

Penn State football has named its captains for the first game of the Matt Campbell era.

As expected, quarterback Rocco Becht will be one of them.

Becht is entering his fourth year as a starting quarterback at the Power 4 level, and guys like that tend to be team captains.

Penn State’s second offensive captain is Anthony Donkoh, which again, isn’t much of a surprise.

Of the 25 players who enrolled in Penn State’s 2023 recruiting class, only 10 are still with the program, and with the possible exception of linebacker Tony Rojas, none have been as impactful as Donkoh, who will be starting at right tackle.

The defensive captain is inside linebacker Kooper Ebel, who, like Becht, is coming over with coach Matt Campbell from Iowa State after three seasons.

Rojas told media this week that Ebel is “one of our vocal leaders on the defense and as a team.”

“Whenever we have a bad practice or a bad play, he’ll be one of the first guys to speak up and try to hold everyone accountable as a team and as a defense,” Rojas said.

The special teams captain is long snapper Blaise Sokach-Minnick. He’s expected to take the long snapper role after Tyler Duzansky’s graduation.

Campbell mentioned Sokach-Minnick Tuesday as a player whose leadership has vastly improved. He’s entering his fifth season at Penn State.

Campbell said the Wednesday of Marshall week that Penn State is still working to name permanent captains, and for now it will be done on a game-to-game basis.
