Penn State Football: Matt Campbell Says Taylor Mouser has Done ‘Good Job’ Despite Self-Criticism

The jury is still out on Penn State football offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser.

This is true for anybody that’s only coached two games at a particular institution.

But if Mouser’s words Tuesday are any indication, he isn’t too happy with himself.

Penn State’s running game hasn’t gotten going yet, and Mouser blames himself for it.

His boss was a little kinder.

WHAT MATT CAMPBELL SAID

“Now you’ve got to make me say something nice about Mouse,” Campbell joked. “I think Mouse has done a really good job. Even on Saturday, it wasn’t the plays — it was the execution and the detail. Those are things that we just have to be better.

“Again, I think you see the first play of the game, then you’re a hair off on a couple of the next four. It wasn’t the plays, it was the execution and the detail of the plays…I think Mouse has done a great job.”

After Saturday’s win, running back Carson Hansen said he felt Mouser had a great game plan, but that he was among the players that needed to be better.

“We just got to like clean up, you know, when it comes to the running back position,” Hansen said. “I need to be able to break some of those tackles in the red zone. I need to get in the red zone. I got to, you know, hold myself accountable for this and have urgency this week to be able to break tackles and go for long runs.”

IT ISN’T ALL BAD

Penn State offense has been far from a disaster.

Quarterback Rocco Becht has been fantastic, throwing for seven touchdowns and no interceptions through two games, and five different targets have caught those touchdowns.

Penn State is averaging 36 points per game, and things will be pretty good if it stays at that pace.
