In an interview with Penn State beat reporters late Monday morning, offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser mentioned a guy who he thinks could be the unit’s MVP through fall camp.
That guy was offensive lineman Trevor Buhr.
Buhr, an All-Big 12 honorable mention last season at Iowa State, is entering his fourth year of college football and is thought to be a nailed-on starter on the OL.
WHAT MOUSER SAID
“I think Trevor Buhr, I mean, might be our MVP through the first three weeks of camp or whatever,” Mouser said. “It’s been 10 days. Feels like a lot longer.
And what specifically has Buhr done to stand out?
“I think just the consistency that he plays with,” Mouser said. “He plays a very, very physically demanding position (left guard). Him and (right guard) Cooper Cousins are o-linemen that take pride in how violent and physical they can be. And Trevor has done a good job of that. And he’s consistent in pass pro every rep, doesn’t lose him in pass pro, and is violent at the point of attack. And we got some really big, stout dudes in there on the defensive line. So I think just being the same guy in a time period where it’s hard to find.”
Buhr has many teammates— 23, to be exact— that transferred with him from Iowa State to Penn State.
One of them gave a pretty telling quote.
“It’s fun to watch him not have to think out there and just be able to sprint off the ball and kill somebody,” tight end Ben Brahmer said via Mark Brennan of Lions247.
NOT THE ONLY ONE
Buhr wasn’t the only player Mouser spoke highly of Monday.
He described Cousins as someone who “plays with his hair on fire.”
“Like if I could switch places with any (player), I might switch places with Cooper Cousins,” Mouser said, “just because (of) how
violent and (the amount of) fun that guy has playing football. He’s awesome.”
Mouser also said that Buhr has been working with Malachi Goodman on the left side of the line, indicating that Goodman is in front in the left tackle battle.
