Penn State Places Two Tight Ends on John Mackey Award Watch List

Benjamin Brahmer gears up for Penn State

Penn State’s tight end room is continuing its tradition of being “Tight End U” with two of its tight ends are receiving national recognition entering the 2026 season.

Senior Benjamin Brahmer and redshirt senior Gabe Burkle were both named to the John Mackey Award Watch List that is presented annually to the nation’s top tight end.

Brahmer arrives in Happy Valley after a productive career at Iowa State, where he established himself as one of the Big 12’s top tight ends. A 2025 John Mackey Award semifinalist and second-team All-Big 12 selection, Brahmer appeared in 33 games with 14 starts for the Cyclones.

The 6-foot-7, 250-pound Nebraska native has totaled 75 career receptions for 977 yards and nine touchdowns. Last season, he caught 37 passes for 446 yards and six scores, tying for sixth among all FBS tight ends in touchdown receptions while also ranking among the national leaders with 15 receptions of at least 15 yards.

Burkle also earned a spot on the watch list after being recognized before the 2025 season. The 6-foot-6, 247-pound Iowa native has been one of the most dependable pass catchers at the position, recording a reception in 16 consecutive games.

Over his collegiate career, Burkle has hauled in 54 catches for 607 yards and two touchdowns. He posted nearly identical receiving seasons over the past two years, recording 26 receptions for 296 yards and a touchdown in 2024 before following with 26 catches for 302 yards and another score in 2025. Burkle has also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big 12 honors twice and CSC Academic All-District recognition.

Penn State’s lone Mackey Award winner was Tyler Warren in 2024.

No. 17 Penn State will open the Matt Campbell era on September 5 against Marshall at 3:30 PM (Eastern) from Beaver Stadium.
