CLEVELAND, Ohio — Penn State’s Rocco Welsh came up one point short of an NCAA championship Saturday night, falling to Minnesota’s Max McEnelly 4-3 in the 184-pound final at the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Rocket Arena.

McEnelly struck first less than a minute into the opening period, securing a takedown at the 59-second mark to take a 3-0 lead. Welsh answered quickly with an escape five seconds later to cut the deficit to 3-1 and keep himself within striking distance.

In the second period, McEnelly added an escape to extend the lead to 4-1, forcing Welsh to chase the match entering the third. Welsh responded with another escape early in the final period to make it 4-2 and continued pressing for the tying takedown as the clock wound down.

He never found it, but Welsh did earn a point on a late penalty sequence tied to stalling calls against McEnelly in the closing seconds. That narrowed the margin to 4-3, though it was not enough to complete the comeback.

For McEnelly, he avenges his 2-1 loss in tiebreakers against Welsh at the 2025-26 Big Ten Wrestling Championships.

It was a tough finish for Welsh, who put together an outstanding tournament run to reach the national final and help Penn State continue its dominant weekend in Cleveland. Even in defeat, Welsh added another All-America finish to the Nittany Lions’ historic NCAA Championships performance.
