Penn State wrestling set an NCAA scoring record with 177 points at last year’s national championships.
It got 90.5 of those points through the Session III
This year, through the quarters, Penn State is well-ahead of that pace with 105.5 points.
Getting eight of your 10 starters in the semifinals will do that.
NCAA Championship Results: Penn State Crowns Eight All-Americans, Takes Commanding Lead
Penn State’s seven No. 1 seeds— another NCAA record— all made it through to the semis, as did Marcus Blaze, who is the No. 3 seed at 133 pounds. A semifinal berth will give Penn State no fewer than 48 additional points, since no semifinalist can finish worse than sixth place and a sixth place finish is worth six points.
The 48 is probably conservative.
Penn State won last year’s team championship by 60 over Nebraska, who had 117.
Mark Manning and the Huskers are currently in second place at 66 points which is 39 points behind Penn State.
Penn State will not repeat its historic feat of having 10 All-Americans last season. Braeden Davis (141) and Cole Mirasola (heavyweight) lost in the consolation round and thus won’t be making it to the podium.
But PSU has eight All-American spots secured, and the semifinal bouts for Friday night are as follows:
125 – Luke Lilledahl vs. Troy Spratley (Oklahoma State)
133 – Marcus Blaze vs. Ben Davino (Ohio State)
149 – Shayne Van Ness vs. Chance Lamer (Nebraska)
157 – PJ Duke vs. Landon Robideau (Oklahoma State)
165 – Mitchell Mesenbrink vs. Cesar Alvin (Columbia)
174 – Levi Haines vs. Patrick Kennedy (Iowa)
184 – Rocco Welsh vs. Brock Mantanona (Michigan)
Nittany Sports Now’s Kyle Golik is in Cleveland for all the action all weekend long.
