University Park— In the third period of Friday’s dual meet between Penn State wrestling and Nebraska, Nebraska’s Brock Hardy, ranked No. 4 at 133 pounds, pinned Penn State’s Braeden Davis, ranked No. 12.
After Hardy pinned Davis, he appeared to slap him in the chest twice.
Davis took exception, and retaliated with an apparent kick.
The kick was enough to cost Penn State’s a point, and bring Nebraska to within 7-6.
For Davis, it’s his second loss in the past four matches. In Iowa City two weeks ago, he fell to Iowa’s Nasir Bailey, ranked No. 11, 3-2.
To be fair, Davis is adjusting to a new weight, and if everything had gone according to plan, he’d be redshirting his junior season.
But because of Aaron Nagao’s season-ending shoulder injury, Davis ended up becoming Penn State’s starter at 141.
Before this season, Davis had success at both 133– where he finished fifth at last year’s national championships to earn All-America status— and 125, where he was a Big Ten champion as a true freshman two seasons ago.
He had his toughest challenge of the season Friday night, taking on Hardy, who is a three-time All-American, and last season, was national runner up at 141.
Davis was leading the bout in the third period before he was pinned, so even in defeat, Davis proved that he can compete with the best at this new weight.
