This season, Penn State has struggled making stops on third downs and keeping momentum on its side.
Entering today, Penn State is 105th nationally in allowing third down conversations (43.6%) and near the bottom over the last three weeks allowing nearly half of third down attempts at 48.4%.
In comparison, last year Penn State was in the Top 20 allowing only 36.8% of third down attempts to opponents.
In a second quarter series, it appeared Penn State was going to get a stop on a sack by Dani Dennis-Sutton, who would have recorded his first sack since Week 1 against Nevada, but the play was negated to a holding penalty that extended the drive for Indiana.
Penn State was able to secure a stop on a surging Indiana team that made it all the way to the Nittany Lion five-yard line.
On consecutive plays, Penn State got to Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza on the corner blitz from freshman Daryus Dixson to force a third and 12.
After Indiana tackle Bray Lynch committed a false start infraction, the Nittany Lion defense blanketed a potent Hoosier offense holding them to a field goal.
On Penn State’s ensuing possession, running back Kaytron Allen fumbled within their own 20-yard line which set up a short Indiana touchdown to put the Hoosiers up 17-7 going into the half.
