Penn State football did something it didn’t do during its entire non-conference slate last season, and it only took one game.
PSU was favored by 23.5 points against Marshall, and almost doubled that spread, winning by 45.
Now, it was only Marshall, but consider who Penn State played in last year’s non-conference slate: Nevada, Florida International and Villanova.
Penn State didn’t cover in any of those games, and never covered the spread until the seventh game of last season, which is partly how they went from preseason national championship favorites to ending the year 6-6.

But one thing this Penn State team can say that last year’s can’t is that it made a game against a Group of 5 opponent look like a game against a Group of 5 opponent.
