Last year didn’t go according to plan for Quinton Martin.
He came into the season as one of the most promising members of Penn State’s Class of 2024.
But a combination of injuries and a loaded position room led to a year that was, at times, frustrating for the Pride of Belle Vernon.
He was banged up throughout spring camp, and that missed time helped lead to classmate Corey Smith being Penn State’s No. 3 RB behind Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, not Martin.
Now, Martin is healthy, and he’s always been versatile. That makes him quite the intriguing player for Penn State.
Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 206 pounds
Hometown: Belle Vernon, PA
Before Penn State: Martin had one of the more decorated careers in WPIAL history. As a junior, he led Belle Vernon to district and state titles. He did the same as a senior and ended the season with 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns rushing. But wait, there’s more! His receiving stats (54 catches, 753 yards, 11 touchdowns) were stellar, as well, and this is just offense we’re talking about.
Martin was also a quality defensive back for Belle Vernon to the point where, although Belle Vernon defensive coordinator Brett Berish has no doubt Martin will be a successful running back or receiver, he feels Martin would be best on the other side of the ball.
A high-end four-star recruit, Martin committed to Penn State in April 2023 and signed in December.
Last year: Martin ended the season with 32 yards in 13 carries.
Where he stands: Martin is going to have to fight for playing time.
Singleton and Allen are both back and both have a shot to break the school rushing record.
Smith, who made the most of his opportunities as a true freshman, is also back. As is Cam Wallace, a third-year back who suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3.
It’s called “RBU” for a reason, and nothing will come easy for Martin. But that’s part of why he signed, and stayed
A quote by Quinton Martin: “Obviously, I was hurt. Me and Coach Seider built an incredible bond this season. He taught me a lot about the running back position, about the game as a whole. But at the end of the day, he had to do what’s best for himself and his family, and I completely respect his decision.” — Martin on why he stayed at Penn State after RB coach Ja’Juan Seider left for the same position at Notre Dame
