Penn State coach James Franklin wanted a linebacker out of the transfer portal, and now he has one.
North Carolina transfer Amare Campbell has committed to Penn State, his agency, APSportsAgency, told multiple national outlets.
This is coming off Campbell’s official visit to Penn State, which took place Monday.
The 6-foot, 230-pounder had 76 tackles for Carolina last season to go along with 6.5 sacks.
Penn State has use for another LB, especially on the inside. With three-year starter Kobe King departing for the NFL, there isn’t a clear front runner for Penn State’s MIKE linebacker position. Although Campbell doesn’t play exclusively on the inside, he started five games there last season per Pro Football Focus.
Franklin didn’t sugarcoat things when asked about the linebacker room following the team’s annual spring game late last month.
“If there’s a linebacker out there that wants to come and be a part of our program and play for LBU, the most historic linebacker program in the history of college football, there’s an opportunity here to join the room and compete,” Franklin said. “I think we’ve got enough in the room, but to get through an entire season, if we get some injuries, it could get challenging. So we’re gonna look at the portal, see if we can find a solution.”
