In recruiting news, PJ Duke, a Penn State wrestling commit in the class of 2025, will be competing in the 2025 US Open at 70 kg in the U20 division.
Duke, who will be wrestling for the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, already has titles at Super 32 and the Fargo Junior National Championships.
There are now seven Penn State commits registered to wrestle in the US Open, which will be held from April 23-27 in Las Vegas. Marcus Blaze, Nathan Desmond, Sam Herring, Dalton Perry, William Henckel, and Jayden James will also wrestle in the event.
Duke won his fourth New York state championship in March at 170 pounds, but will likely be competing as either a 157 or 165-pounder in college.
Letโs throw it back to when Duke committed to Penn State wrestling in the fall of 2023, a massive recruiting win.
NSN talked to both Duke and his trainer, Khaled Dassan.
For Dassan, Duke can be a four-time NCAA champ, a world champ and an Olympic champ.
โHe has the capability to do so,โ Dassan said. โItโs not an easy feat, but itโs something that I believe he can accomplish. Especially in a room like that (Penn Stateโs) with those types of coaches, it definitely makes things I think a bit easier. Heโll still have to do the work, but it definitely doesnโt hurt to have those types of partners and those types of coaches in the room with you every day.โ
Duke grew up watching guys like Jason Nolf, a former Pan American Champion, and fellow Penn State great Zain Retherford, who won two Hodge Trophies in college and has been a World Champion and Olympic qualifier. Heโs also admired guys such as Kyle Dake (another four-time national champ and four-time world champion) and Vito Arujau, who won a national title for Cornell in March 2023 and is the reigning World Champion at 61 KG.
Whenever heโs done with wrestling, Duke wants to be known as somebody cut from the same cloth.
โThatโs the plan,โ he told NSN. โJust be like them and win world titles.โ
