Trace McSorley is officially returning to Penn State.

On Tuesday, the former star quarterback was added to the PSU directory as an assistant quarterbacks coach on James Franklin’s staff.

Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft teased at a reunion during THON events Saturday.

Nittany Sports Now confirmed Saturday that McSorley would join the football program as an analyst in the QB room. A dynamic runner while at Penn State, McSorley will now work with senior quarterback Drew Allar,  who’s back for his final year and striving to shake off a difficult Orange Bowl performance to take the last step towards a championship win in the playoffs.

Trace McSorley, 29, guided Penn State to a Big Ten Championship win over Wisconsin in 2016 and appearance in the 2017 Rose Bowl during his four-year career spanning 2015-2018.

He and Saquon Barkley guided Penn State to a 38-31 come-from-behind win in Indianapolis as one of the most memorable games and victories in the James Franklin era.

McSorley led the Big Ten in passing yards during the 2016 (3,614) and 2017 (3,570) seasons as Penn State combined to finish 22-5 during that span, including a 2017 Fiesta Bowl victory against Washington. He rushed for 1,697 total yards, including 798 yards in 13 years during his senior year.

McSorely bounced around the NFL after being selected in the sixth round of the 2019 Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. The 6-foot, 200-pound QB also spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

He spent two weeks with the Washington Commanders in the preseason before hanging up the cleats to begin coaching. McSorely and his wife Kasey are expecting their first child later in 2025. McSorley joins an exciting group of new and returning PSU players with the ultimate goal of a title on their minds and ready to take the next step to win a National Championship.
